General Information about Dental Implants
There are many reasons that adults and children can lose their permanent teeth including decay, periodontitis (gum disease), injury or trauma, wear and tear, or even the failure of a root canal to resolve a problem. When teeth are lost, the surrounding teeth are also at risk for the development of problems too, and as more and more are removed or begin to decay the health of the individual can be put at risk.
Additionally, those who have lost their teeth are usually embarrassed by the fact and will seek a smile makeover to improve the situation. Generally, most cosmetic dentists would recommend the use of dental implants to replace the missing teeth.
Implants do much more than cosmetically enhance the smile, however, and can give the individual a more youthful appearance simply by preventing the face from looking “collapsed”. They can also strengthen the jaw and make it easier to maintain a healthy diet as well.
Dental implants are done through the insertion of a prosthetic root which bonds with the jawbone and surrounding tissue. Once this implant has “taken,” the dentist can then cover the top of the implant with a crown. Additionally, an implant is a much more stable base for those with a dental bridge or dentures as well.
While this makes the entire dental implant process sound very simple, it does take a considerable amount of time and involves the use of a cosmetic dentist as well as an oral surgeon too. Fortunately, the process of implantation has improved quite dramatically over the years and the success rate is consistent and high for most patients.
Most people are told to stop smoking before a dental implant is attempted because this tends to cause the failure of the process. Generally, however, most patients can enjoy a smooth transition from implant to the attachment of the crown, and with standard oral hygiene will enjoy many years with their attractive new smile.
